U.S. Firms that Hire International Student Engineers

After an international student completes their studies in the United States, they have to figure out if they want to stay and work in the United States or go back to their native country and try and find work there. A lot of personal and logistical matters influence this decision, and it is by no means an easy one. This blog will detail the top companies that hire international students with an MS degree (we have previously compiled a list of the top United States firms that hire international student aerospace engineers).

The engineering industry covers a wide variety of different jobs. This report details the largest H1B visa sponsors in the Architectural, Engineering, and Related Services industry. Finding a job in engineering can be difficult, whether you are an international student or not. However, international students do have an extra hurdle to jump when it comes to securing a job in the United States due to needing a visa sponsor.

Just because international students have an extra hurdle to jump does not mean that they cannot find an engineering job once they have received their degree. If an international student works hard and remains dedicated, they can distinguish themselves from their peers and possibly land the engineering job they wish to have in the United States. If you have outstanding grades and an exceptional resume and interview well, a company will try and find the right spot for you.

Some of these companies in the engineering industry are:

L&T Technology Services (1,853),
Engineering Technology Associates (424),
Satyam-Venture Engineering Services Pvt. (176),
Aecom Technical Services (169),
Smartplay (166),
Geometric Americas (138),
Haliburton Energy Services (135).

Remember, these are not the only companies in the engineering industry hiring international students and H1B visa holders. These are merely a few of the largest ones and should be used as a jumping off point instead of a definitive list.

The average salaries for visa holders at these companies vary. The highest is Smartplay, with an average salary of $120,832 and the lowest is L&T Technology Services, with $69,648. For a narrower range of average salary, it is better to research in the specific field of engineering rather than the totality of the general industry.

One of the best (but not only) ways to land a job at a large company is to start with an internship at either that company or a smaller one in the engineering industry and working your way up. While it takes time and patience, it will help you build experience and show to a future employer that you are familiar with the industry beyond your degree.

An engineering degree can help open the door for you to basically work in a wide variety of different industries. What is meant by this is that one can be an agricultural engineer or one can be a biomedical engineer – both fall under the category of engineer, but the jobs are completely different. If you have successfully received an engineering degree, many different opportunities can be available to you.

Even if you cannot find an engineering job in the United States that does not mean you cannot work in the engineering industry. There are a plethora of engineering jobs available across the world. Depending on your personal preferences and logistical matters, you should not narrow your job/career search solely to the United States. There are engineering opportunities all over the world.

Another great way for international students to potentially find jobs in the engineering industry are to work with the career services offices at their respective schools and for their respective programs. This is usually a great starting point because of the resources they have available and the employees who are there to help you find jobs that relate to the degree you are trying to receive.

Finding a job in the engineering industry can be tough for international students.
